A partir de ahora mis novelas se editarán simultáneamente en edición “cara”, de las llamadas “de tapa dura”, en edición de bolsillo a mitad de precio, podrán descargarse gratuitamente en “Internet” y todos los periódicos o revistas que lo deseen están autorizados a publicarlas al estilo de las antiguas novelas por entregas con la diferencia que en este caso no tendrán obligación de pagarme nada en concepto de derechos de autor.
Me han preguntado si es que me he vuelto loco, me sobra el dinero o pretendo arruinarme y arruinar de paso a mi editor. No es el caso.
He meditado largamente sobre el tema y he llegado a la conclusión de que hoy en día hay público para todos los niveles adquisitivos del mismo modo que quien lo desea puede almorzar en un restaurante de lujo, en una simple hamburguesería e incluso acudir a un comedor social.
También puede hacerse un traje a medida, comprárselo en unos grandes almacenes o en un rastrillo dominguero.
Igual ocurre en la mayor parte de las facetas del consumo, excepto en lo que se refiere a los lectores que tienen que resignarse a pagar el precio que marca el editor que ha adquirido los derechos en exclusiva de un determinado libro o aguardar años hasta que se edite en bolsillo.
Y desde luego nunca lo obtendrá gratis.
Y se me antoja injusto porque la cultura es tan importante como comer o vestirse, y desde luego mucho más importante que adquirir un coche donde se ofrecen cien gamas de precios donde elegir.
Mi próxima novela trata sobre Irak y las oscuras maquinaciones de las grandes compañías americanas que inventaron la existencia de armas de destrucción masiva con el fin de iniciar una guerra que ha costado casi medio millón de muertos y nunca podrá ganarse, pero que produce miles de millones de beneficios a empresas directamente ligadas a lo mas altos cargos de la administración republicana.
Y a mis lectores, cualquiera que sea su condición social o capacidad adquisitiva, ese tema les interesa conocerlo a fondo en estos momentos, no dentro de dos años, que sería cuando cualquier otra editorial considerase que ya había exprimido al máximo el limón de la “tapa dura” y tuviera a bien editarla en bolsillo para unos lectores “De Segunda Categoría”.
No deben existir lectores de segunda ni de tercera categoría, porque lo que importa es su relación directa con el autor independientemente de lo lujoso que sea el vehículo que proporcione dicha relación.
Al cumplir cincuenta años como escritor muchas personas me han asegurado que se acostumbraron a leer con mis novelas de aventuras, y aunque algunas me han sido infieles con el paso del tiempo, lo que importa es el hecho de que empezaron a leer y aficionaron de igual modos a quienes les rodeaban.
Folletines del estilo de “Los tres mosqueteros”, “Los Miserables” o “El Conde de Montecristo” consiguieron que, al poder acceder gratuitamente a tan magníficos textos, en el transcurso de una sola generación el número de lectores franceses se multiplicara por tres.
Los editores no tienen derecho a quejarse de que “se lee poco” mientras mantienen el control sobre el precio de lo que en ese momento interesa, ni las autoridades deberían promover absurdas campañas publicitarias que no conducen mas que a gastar dinero; lo que deben hacer es presionar a los editores a la hora de poner los libros al alcance de todos los bolsillos.
Personalmente prefiero que me lean dos estudiantes, obreros o secretarias en el autobús por siete euros, que un alto ejecutivo en su cómodo despacho por veinte, porque aunque gane menos si el libro es bueno esos dos lectores se convertían en cuatro y luego en ocho, y resulta evidente que existen muchos mas obreros, estudiantes y secretarias que altos ejecutivos.
Y si el libro es malo ni unos ni otros lo compraran.
En cuanto al hecho de ofrecerlo gratuitamente en “Internet” tengo claro que quien lo descargue de la red nunca hubiera comprado mi novela, o sea que prefiero que me lea gratis a que no me lea.
Tal vez la próxima vez se decida a comprar un libro aunque no sea mío.
Algo es cierto: he vendido casi veinticinco millones de libros y todo el dinero que me han pagado me lo he gastado, pero una gran parte de los lectores que he conseguido, aun los conservo.
Y de todo el dinero que gané la mitad se lo llevo Hacienda.
Sin embargo Hacienda aun no ha logrado arrebatarme un solo lector.
En Inglaterra, país culto donde los haya, los escritores no pagan impuestos por el fruto de su trabajo, pero en España, pese a pertenecer también a la Unión Europea, cada año debo entregar la mitad de mis ingresos a Hacienda o me embargan.
Eso significa que un escritor ingles cuenta con el doble de medios económicos que yo para viajar o investigar a la hora de encarar un nuevo trabajo.
Eso no evita que las autoridades españolas se lamenten de que nos esté invadiendo la cultura anglosajona, y lo único que se les ocurre para remediarlo es adquirir los más emblemáticos y costosos edificios de cada capital con el fin de instalar un nuevo Instituto Cervantes en el que dar cobijo a “intelectuales” afines al partido que se encuentre en esos momentos en el poder.
Para nuestra voraz, inculta y derrochadora administración tan solo somos europeos cuando conviene, y esa es una de las razones por la que prefiero regalarle la mitad de mis ganancias a unos lectores anónimos que tal vez me lo agradezcan, que a un gobierno que no solo no lo agradece, sino que no acepta que para escribir un una novela interesante sea necesario viajar e investigar.
Siento curiosidad por saber si las editoriales continuaran con su absurda política inmovilista o comprenderán que es hora de renovar unos hábitos que no han evolucionado un ápice en trescientos años mientras que a su alrededor el mundo se transforma a marchas forzadas.
En mi juventud una película se estrenaba en una única y enorme sala, estaba casi un año en cartel y tan solo entonces pasaba a los cines de barrio. Hoy se estrena en cuarenta multisalas, a los quince días se edita en “DVD”, al mes se compra en televisión, y se puede ver en las cadenas abiertas a los tres meses.
Si las grandes productoras cinematográficas, con sus complejos estudios de “marketing” han llegado al convencimiento de que esa es la formula que conviene en los tiempos que corren, las editoriales deberían tomar buena nota al respecto.
El mundo del libro tiene la enorme suerte de que no resulta rentable a los “piratas” del “Top-Manta” que tanto daño hace a las industrias del cine y la música, pero por eso mismo, y por la gran competencia de la televisión y todo tipo de deportes de masas, los que lo gestionan deberían plantearse un cambio radical e intentar conseguir lectores antes que beneficios.
Sin lectores no hay beneficios, y cuando haya muchos lectores ya llegaran los beneficios.
Resultará muy interesante comprobar si los Ministerio de Cultura y Hacienda seguirán opinando que es preferible que los empresarios- en este caso los editores- continúen manteniendo el privilegio de abaratar los precios únicamente cuando les convenga sin tener en cuenta los intereses de los lectores, al tiempo que no cesan de apretarle las clavijas al pobre trabajador- en este caso el autor.
Por lo visto un gobierno que se autodenomina socialista considera que es preferible proteger al que se beneficia económicamente de la cultura que al que la crea.
Existen varias editoriales multimillonarias, pero ni un solo autor español mínimamente “acomodado”
El viejo dicho, “En España escribir es llorar” ya no tiene sentido: debería decirse “En España escribir- y leer- es pagar”.
